BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Red Sox player Bill Buckner has died. He was 69 years old.

Buckner passed away early Monday morning. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap, Buckner’s wife, Jody, called to inform him of the death.

“After battling the disease of Lewy Body Dementia, Bill Buckner passed away early the morning of May 27 surrounded by his family. Bill fought with courage and grit as he did all things in life. Our hearts are broken but we are at peace knowing he is in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Jody said in a statement.

Buckner played for the Red Sox during the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets where he famously made an error during Game 6, where he allowed a ball to go through his legs.

Buckner played in Major League Baseball from 1969 to 1990, ending his career as the first baseman for the Red Sox.
