Freeze Warning Spells Danger For Garden Plants Thursday Night

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Frigid temperatures will make their way through the region on Thursday, and a local nursery is warning plant owners to beware.

The National Weather Service issued a Freeze Warning for a swath of inland southeastern Massachusetts on Thursday morning. The warning runs from Thursday evening through early Friday. The area extends roughly from the Rhode Island border to Pembroke, north to Wellesley and south to the Carver area.

According to the Weather Service, temperatures could drop to below freezing inside the Freeze Warning area, potentially killing more sensitive plants and making outdoor water pipes burst. Forecast lows for Boston were at about 34 degrees on Thursday afternoon.

The warning follows unseasonably cold weather Thursday morning, including reports of flurries by some local meteorologists.

Michael Molliver co-owns Village Green Nurseries in Norwood and Norfolk, and said plant owners should be careful to cover their more cold-sensitive plants Thursday before 7:00 or 8:00 PM.

"Cover them up. Cheap blankets, black plastic is great. But cheap blankets are perfect because they're stuffed with polyester and everything," he said.

Molliver said hardier vegetables — like broccoli, kale, cauliflower and lettuce — could probably take the cold. He normally advises people to hold off on putting other plants in the ground until the last week of May.
