BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Each trip to the pump is becoming a costlier affair as gas prices tick ever higher in Massachusetts. Now, AAA's latest estimates say the trend may not end until the fall. Gas prices in Massachusetts are up 7 cents a gallon on average versus a month ago, and three cents from last week.
The spike in prices is being driven by several factors, the association said. Top of the list were confidence in the global vaccine rollout, a spike in crude oil demand, and the easing of travel restrictions.
Though AAA pointed out it is normal to see spikes in price around holidays like July Fourth, these prices are the highest consumers have seen near the Fourth since 2014. Those high prices aren't expected to go away soon, and will likely rise through the end of the summer.
At this time last year, only a quarter of US gas stations were selling a gallon for more than $2.25 — now, 89% are over the $2.75 mark, while the national average sits even higher at $3.09 and climbing.
