TOPSFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Topsfield Fair kicked off Friday night with some massive gourds looking to tip the scales.

Event Chair and two-time contest winner Woody Lancaster hosted the 39th New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off alongside the Topsfield Fair Jim O’Brien General Manager.

Contestants had big shoes to fill after Tyngsboro’s Jamie Graham broke the record in 2022 with a pumpkin weighing a staggering 2,480 pounds. The previous record of 2,294.5 pounds was set in 2019 by Alex Noel of Abington, Conn.

This year, Steven Sperry of Johnston, R.I., took home the $6,500 grand prize with a 2,198-pound pumpkin.

Thomas Keenan of Swampscott, Mass. finished in second with a 2,074-pound pumpkin, and Stephen Hallowell of Duxbury, Mass. finished third at 1,631 pounds.
