'Gourd' For The Environment: Cambridge Asks Residents To Compost Pumpkins

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Now that Halloween has come and passed, the City of Cambridge wants residents to take a more environmentally friendly approach to taking down the decorations.

Nearly 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills across the nation every year during the Halloween season. When the pumpkins end up in landfills and break down, they release methane gas and contribute to climate change.

Instead of throwing the pumpkins into the garbage, Cambridge residents are encouraged to compost them. They placed six different drop-off locations across the city where people can leave their pumpkins. All pumpkins and gourds left in the drop-off areas need to have wax and paint removed.
