CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Student workers at Harvard University are protesting to demand stronger protections against sexual harassment and discrimination—as their union goes a year without a contract.

Members of HGSU-UAW chanted and held signs outside University Hall Wednesday morning. Inside, more than 30 student workers were conducting a sit-in.

Niharika Singh told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas the student workers are demanding a contract, claiming the university is failing to provide key protections.

"Additionally, Harvard likes to talk about gender equity a lot," she said. "We know what matters for gender equity—it's wages, it's dependent care, it's childcare. Their economic proposals on all these fronts have been paltry."

The press were not allowed to take pictures or video of the sit-in, and were escorted off the property.

Harvard has not responded for comment at this time.
