Highway Renumbering Project Begins On Interstate 495 In Mass.

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New numbers are coming to Interstate 495, as the highway renumbering project gets underway there.

Work began overnight on Sunday, to change the signs between Middleboro and Amesbury.

Officials said the highway is broken up into four segments for the project and crews started between 195 and Interstate 95. After this segment is complete, crews will move north.

The project is expected to take about five weeks in total. In addition, work to finish renumbering the signs on Interstate 93 between Somerville and Methuen is expected to take two more weeks, as well.

For anyone worried about being confused by the change, the state has an interactive website that shows what the new mileage-based exit numbers will be.

The exit number change is part of a Federal Highway Administration mandate that requires the exits to match corresponding mile markers.

According to MassDot, the old exit numbers will be displayed under the new ones at key locations for a minimum of two years.

Crews already replaced the exit numbers on Interstate-90, Route 128, the Massachusetts Turnpike and more.

The entire project is expected to be done by this summer.
