HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hingham has become the latest Massachusetts community to approve a ban on the commercial sale or distribution of single-use plastic water bottles under a gallon.
Voters at an April 24th town meeting approved the ban becoming the 25th of the 351 communities in the state that have implemented the ban.
First responders are exempt from Hingham's new law.
The Hingham ban is being phased-in. First, starting this year, no single-use plastic water bottles will be sold or distributed in Hingham schools or any public buildings.
Then, the commercial ban starts on Jan. 1, 2024.
Nina is a Hingham resident and is all for the ban. “It’s not that big of a deal to carry your own water bottle,” she said. “And I get to bring better quality water wherever I go.”
Bob, another resident, said that he’s behind the new ban. “Plastic is not environmentally safe.”
Officials say for people who don’t comply, first-time violations are a warning. After that, fines start at $100 to go no higher than $300.
