Hot Weather Causes Closures, Early Dismissals At Some Mass. Schools

WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The school year has just begun for many, but some districts are already announcing closures and early dismissals because of the heat this week.

Worcester:

Worcester Public Schools will dismiss students three hours early on Thursday, Sept. 7, and Friday Sept. 8.

For high school sports, all games will be cancelled for Wednesday and Thursday. Teams may only practice after 6 p.m. or at 6 a.m. on those days for indoor and outdoor sports on Wednesday and Thursday. No decisions have been made about Friday games and practices.

Lowell:

Lowell Public Schools will be closed on Thursday Sept. 7, and Friday Sept. 8.

In a statement, the district says the "temperatures in many classrooms are expected to be too hot for teachers to teach effectively. This decision was made out concern for the health and safety of Lowell Public School staff and students."

Framingham:

Framingham Public Schools will close early on Thursday, Sept. 7. All sports and other after-school activities will be cancelled.

Westfield:

Westfield Public Schools had early dismissal on Wednesday, and will have it again on Thursday, Sept. 7. Elementary school students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m., intermediate and middle school students at 11:30 a.m., and high school students at 11 a.m.

Springfield:

Springfield Public Schools dismissed students early on Wednesday. They will also have early dismissal on Thursday, Sept. 7. After-school activities have been cancelled.
