BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey endorsed City Councilor Michelle Wu for Boston mayor on Saturday.

Janey made an appearance alongside Wu, her one-time mayoral rival, in Roxbury's Nubian Square to give her the nod.

"Black and brown residents who are most impacted by systemic inequities need a leader in city hall who will center equity, justice and inclusion in all of her policies and ensure that we have a seat at the table when important decisions are being made," Mayor Janey said. That leader, she said, was Michelle Wu.

The acting mayor came in fourth in the preliminary Boston mayoral race with about 19.5% of the vote — Wu came in first with a third of the overall vote-share. Only the top two vote-getters make it to the general election in November, and Janey was knocked out of contention.

Wu praised Janey during the appearance, painting Janey's administration as leaving a legacy that her campaign could build on.

"Her tenure already has reshaped this city for generations to come," she said.

Wu will face fellow City Councilor Annissa Essaibi George in the general election on November 2.
