Red Sox Reporter Jonny Miller Reacts To Mookie Betts Trade

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame Sports Journalist Jonny Miller said Red Sox fans "should be irate" over the team trading homegrown star outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In an interview with WBZ NewsRadio Anchor Jeff Brown, the longtime Red Sox reporter and clubhouse mainstay said he thinks it was a very bad deal for Boston.

"I don't see how the Red Sox can be improved from last year with this trade," said Miller. "The fans should be irate."

In return for left-hander David Price and 2018 American League MVP Mookie Betts, the Red Sox received Dodgers' outfielder Alex Vergudo, and Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol.

According to Miller, the trade of the Red Sox star outfielder only adds to the team's recent troubles. Betts' move out west comes just six months after the team fired baseball operations president Dave Dombrowski, and less than one month after they parted ways with manager Alex Cora.

"I don't like the whole off-season. With what happened to Cora, and this thing, it's a total farce," said Miller.

Betts held several titles with the Red Sox, including World Series Champ, Batting champ, and four-time All Star. He was also a defensive standout and four-time Gold Glove Winner.

The trade does one thing for the Red Sox; it means they will get under the MLB luxury tax, which owner John Henry previously noted was a necessary achievement.

"Obviously you get under the luxury tax, but who cares, right?" asked Brown.

"Who cares!" exclaimed Miller.

Although the trade puts the Red Sox under the luxury tax threshold, Miller said it leaves the team with little hope of winning the World Series anytime soon.

"The Red Sox have no chance to compete against the Yankees this year," said Miller. "And probably to next two or three years."
