DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  Jury selection began Tuesday in the murder trial of Karen Read at Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham. Read is charged in the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe.

Read is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. Prosecutors claim she backed into O'Keefe with her SUV, and then left him for dead in the snow in Canton.

Read's lawyer's are set to argue that someone else murdered O'Keefe in Canton, and that Read is being framed by police. On Tuesday, Judge Beverly Cannone granted the defense's request to make that argument at trial, but the defense needs to provide evidence.

Protestors, who have been demanding justice for Read, demonstrated outside of the courthouse, but had to stay back 200 feet because of a court-mandated buffer zone.
