LAWRENCE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some local teachers at Lawrence High School say violence there has become so bad, school staff are planning a protest on Monday morning.
The rally, organized by the Lawrence Teachers Union, will be a "walk-in" where concerned parents and teachers demonstrate outside the school before morning classes.
Mayor Kendrys Vasquez will also be in attendance, and has scheduled an emergency meeting of the city's elected officials on Monday night to discuss what can be done to curb the fighting. A teacher was injured and two students were arrested in one of the latest fights last week, according to WBZ-TV.
The Lawrence Teachers Union blamed the situation at least partially on "significant understaffing," saying it has "aggravated a challenging back-to-school transition."
Union president Kimberly Barry was critical of the city's School Department saying it has "failed to respond to the social and emotional needs of traumatized students."
The demonstration is scheduled for Monday at 7:30 AM at Lawrence High School.
