BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Members of the transgender community in Massachusetts are using this transgender day of visibility to help raise awareness and support for the community.
Nikk Cochran Selik is commemorating the day, which also marks the day he began his transition. He recently became the first trans man to win the Mr. Boston Cub 2022 award from the nonprofit Mass. Bears and Cubs, an organization that raises money and hosts events for the LGBTQ community.
"It's a big day for me and the community members," he told WBZ's James Rojas. "It means a lot to me to be out here as a trans man and be the first trans man to win Mr. Boston Cub."
To celebrate the occasion, he is working with the nonprofit to host a drag event called Dixie's Drag Jukebox this Saturday at Club Cafe in Boston. Cochran Selik said the goal of the event is to speak out against the recent pushback seen in other states against the LGBTQ community.
"My heart really goes out to the folks that are facing the legislation in some of those states and not talking about it is not going to change anything it's only going to harm people," he said.

While preparing for the event, Cochran Selik spent transgender day of visibility speaking virtually at two libraries back in his home state of Illinois about his identity.
