LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Suspensions are on the rise in Lynn middle schools, and vaping may be to blame.
Lynn public school superintendent Dr. Patrick Tutweiler revealed at a meeting last week that despite overall suspensions being slightly down from 2018 to 2019, middle school suspensions increased by 60 percent.
Tutweiler said that one reason for the sharp uptick in suspensions may have to do with more and more kids being caught vaping, especially sixth graders.

The district is weighing options on how to combat youth vaping.
One option already in place for high school students is the PASS program (Positive Alternative to School Suspension); the program would send kids with substance use infractions to a Beverly center that focuses on therapy and education.
