LYNN, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — As eager teens get the dresses and tuxedos and make other plans for prom season, the Lynn School District is holding a parent prom initiative night to arm parents with information aimed at averting prom tragedy.
WBZ NewsRadio’s Kendall Buhl spoke with one of the people who will be addressing parents: Judith Wayne, a Lynn attorney and expert on so-called social host laws.
Wayne is making sure parents are also prepared for what could go wrong.
“Every year in some state somebody after prom is going to die,” Wayne said “It’s just seems to be the consequence of that particular night.”
Wayne along with police and school officials are working to teach parents in making sure that they know the consequences of minors drinking while they are on their premises.
“They would possibly lose their home, they would lose their job, they would lose their pension,” she said.
Wayne said that parents who allow after-parties on their premises in hopes of keeping high school students off the road on prom night are misguided.
She said that some teens are always going to be one step ahead of parents.
Lynn Public Schools are hoping that this program will help parents to take extra steps to keep their children safe.
