LYNNFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Lynnfield Police Association set up a GoFundMe campaign for a beloved custodian who died unexpectedly last month.

Marien Guzman died when he suffered a heart attack while driving home from work in February, which caused him to crash his car. He had been working in the town of Lynnfield for over 10 years and worked at Lynnfield Schools, the town hall, and the police department.

Lynnfield Police Captain Christopher DeCarlo said he was shocked by the news of Guzman's death and that it hit the community hard because he was such a beloved and familiar face in the town.

"You can look on Facebook and you'll see comments from parents who knew Marien through their kids because their kids loved him," DeCarlo said. "That's just the type of person he was."

In an effort to show support for Guzman's family, the Lynnfield Police Association set up a GoFundMe page to help fundraise for his family to cover funeral expenses and other costs. DeCarlo said Guzman was a family man who worked hard to provide for them and he wants to be able to do the same.

"Being so young, he was only 50, it's impossible to plan for that," he said.

With the funds from the GoFundMe, DeCarlo said they hope to send Guzman's body back to his native Dominican Republican so he can be with his family. At the time of publication, the fundraiser has garnered over $22,000 of its $25,000 goal.
