WALPOLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — You may have heard of the phrase 'dog days,' but how about 'dog diving?' Well, it's actually called dock diving, and that's exactly what's happening over at Canine New England in Walpole, where dogs are long-jumping dozens of feet over a pool all in the name of sport.
WBZ's Matt Shearer visited the pups' prancing playground and spoke with CNE's Co-Owner Lorraine Messier on how the sport has jumped in popularity.
"Our group has grown exponentially, we probably see on average ten to fifteen new clients in our pool [per week]. You know they pour their heart and soul into everything they do, and it makes people happy to see their dogs being happy. It's all about the dog having fun," Messier said.
One of CNE's top dogs is two-year-old Rebel, an Australian Shepherd and Golden Retriever mix that dock diving trains with leaps measuring at least 25 feet. His owner, Ronnie, says she couldn't be happier to take Rebel for his time at the pool.
"I'm very proud of him— this is his first season, he's only been jumping since May. A couple of weeks ago we qualified for the regional finals. It's unbelievable, he does such a great job, he just loves the game," Ronnie said.
