BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With another 1,705 new cases reported on Sunday, Massachusetts now has 38,077 confirmed cases of coronavirus, according to the state Department of Public Health.
That makes Massachusetts the state with the third-highest number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the nation, behind New Jersey (roughly 81,500 cases) and New York (roughly 242,500 cases.)
With an additional 146 deaths announced on Sunday, there have now been a total of 1,706 deaths attributed to the virus in the state. More than half of those deaths have been reported in long-term care facilities.
Over the past week, 55 additional long-term care facilities in Massachusetts have reported at least one case of coronavirus among residents or staff. The death toll inside care facilities has also jumped significantly this week, from 340 deaths last Sunday to 884 deaths as of today.
Middlesex County has more than 8,700 confirmed cases, approximately 23 percent of the state's cases. Middlesex County is the 19th hardest-hit state in the nation, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Suffolk County is 21st hardest-hit in the U.S., with more than 8,000 cases, which is roughly 21 percent of the cases in the state.
Essex County has more than 5,100 cases, or more than 13 percent of the state's cases, and Norfolk County has nearly 3,800 cases, which is around ten percent of the state's cases.
According to DPH, more than 52 percent of cases are female patients, nearly 45 percent are male patients, and around three percent are unknown.
