Mass. Residents Asked To Conserve Water As Statewide Drought Continues

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts residents are being asked to conserve water as a drought is declared in most parts of the state.

According to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, a significant drought has been declared in the southeast region of Massachusetts -- including Norfolk, Plymouth and Bristol counties.

As for the rest of the state -- a mild drought has been declared, except for on the islands.

Environmental officials made the declaration because precipitation totals are 1.5 inches to 3 inches below normal levels.

“It is important that we all take water conservation steps now to lessen its potential impacts on our environment and water supplies, and to take extra precautions when using an open flame or cooking on a grill to prevent wildfires,” Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Kathleen Theoharides said.

Residents are encouraged to reduce their water use both indoors and outdoors -- and be careful around flames to prevent any brush or forest fires.
