MassDOT Commemorates 'Star Wars Day' With Themed Highway Signs

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you're a Star Wars fan in Massachusetts, you may want to hit the highway on Tuesday.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is getting into the spirit of May 4 -- also known as Star Wars Day -- by adding a fun twist to it's typical highway messaging.

"You may be wondering about some unusual messages on Massachusetts highway signs today," State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said in a tweet. "It's always a good day for safety and litter messages but today is also a special day for Star Wars fans, so we thought we would mix it up a bit with some themed messages. #MayThe4thBeWithYou"

The "May the 4th Be With You" play on words comes from the classic Star Wars franchise catchphrase, "May the force be with you" that is often associated with the character Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Though not officially declared, Star Wars Day has been celebrated by fans of the George Lucas films in person and online for decades.

The MassDOT highway signs marking the holiday include messages like "only a Sith litters, keep Mass clean," and "speed is the path to the dark side."
