MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Friday afternoon, billowing smoke could be seen from the Mattapoisett Town Beach, signaling the five-alarm that burned through a boat yard on 32 Nedspoint Road, totaling multiple cars and boats in its path.

Overlooking the harbor, the Mattapoisett Boat Yard was the center of an intense fire that some onlookers say towered over trees, with explosions surging the flames. Resident Donna Creeden told WBZ NewsRadio she was stuck on Ned's Point Road, just down the street from where the inferno was raging. It's a circular road that ends at the Neds Point Lighthouse.

"I've never seen anything quite like it in my life, just explosion after explosion, the flames, the smoke. We're stuck here until they can tell us we can leave, because it's a dead end, the road leads right to the ocean. There's many people here making the best of it," Creeden said.

Creeden says she's heard many explosions, and that the smoke coming from the fire was pitch black.

By 3:30 p.m., WBZ's Tim Dunn reported fire crews had the situation under control. The Mattapoisett Boat Yard's boathouse lays completely in ruin following the fire. Some beachgoers say that's where they saw the flames begin.

WBZ's Tim Dunn (@ConsiderMeDunn) reports.
