BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu proclaimed April 14 as "Mike Gorman Day" in Boston Friday.

Celtics play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman will call his last game Sunday, April 14. He announced his retirement last year ahead of his farewell season.

“Mike Gorman has made an impact across generations of Celtics fans, families and visitors throughout his 40 plus years as the voice of the Boston Celtics,” Wu said in a press release. “His passion, intellect and ability to make every fan feel special and locked in for the whole game is unmatched."

Drew Carter will take over play-by-play duties in the 2024-25 season.

He called road games in the 2023-24 season.

Gorman grew up in Dorchester.

He started his sports broadcasting career calling games for the University of Rhode Island Rams and the Providence College Friars before graduating to nationwide programming with ESPN and CBS.

Celtics fans have listened to him call games since 1981.

"When I started on the broadcast team 43 years ago, I could not have dreamed what an amazing journey this would be," Gorman said when he announced his retirement in July.
