BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the month of March rolls in, the MBTA is implementing some changes to their traditional payment system of change tickets at T stations and bus stops. These changes are part of a larger effort to test a contactless payment system that will make it easier for riders to pay their fares, according to the MBTA. These changes will not affect all riders of the MBTA, because the elimination of change tickets will only apply to buses and trolleys in favor of the reloadable CharlieCard payment system.
The MBTA also plans to roll out a new income-eligible program, which “would improve fare affordability across all modes with 50% reduced one-way fares and passes. Riders 26-64 with low income are eligible if they are enrolled in other programs such as SNAP and MassHealth and are not covered by existing reduced fares programs,” according to their website.
It has been proposed that the ticket changes would only apply to riders of the Green and Mattapan lines according to the MBTA and permanent $10 holiday weekend passes are also under consideration.
