Mending A Broken Heart; Salem Community Helps Puppies In Need

SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Animal lovers across the North Shore have chipped in to save the lives of a couple of puppies who have a serious heart defect.

The Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem takes animals in from all over the country and they did not hesitate to take in a couple puppies found under a shed in Georgia.

But the 12-week-old mix breed puppies both have a life-threatening heart condition, and they need surgery.

However, the surgery is expensive and Northeast Animal Shelter employee Jamie Garabedian says they decided to put out a call for help to the community.

"We posted a fundraiser on Facebook and we circulated a news story to help bring some attention to it and we were very lucky and fortunate to reach our goal pretty quickly," said Garabedian.

Their goal was $10,000 and they reached it in a heartbeat, which means Reesie and Coco will get the lifesaving surgery, later this month.

Garabedian says she appreciates the support from the community.

After surgery, the two puppies will go up for adoption next month.
