BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A man from Methuen is the winner of a $1 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery's "$10,000,000 Winter Riches" instant ticket game.

According to MassLottery, Eric Cochrane says he plans on sharing his winnings with his friend, John Galvin.

Officials say that Cochrane had brought his son's guitar to get repaired at Galvin's guitar store just before buying the winning ticket. Galvin knew that Cochrane's son had a health issue earlier in the week, and decided not to charge Cochrane for the repair, MassLottery said.

Cochrane insisted Galvin take at least $40 for the repair, but Galvin refused the money. It was then that Cochrane told Galvin that he would use the $40 to purchase instant tickets, and that if he won one million dollars, the two of them would split the prize.

One hour later Cochrane and Galvin were on the way to Lottery headquarters, officials said.

Cochrane claimed the prize on Friday, choosing the cash option to receive a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes. The winning ticket was bought at the Howe Street Superette located at 163 Howe Street in Methuen, that store will receive a $10,000 bonus for the ticket's sale, officials said.
