BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Despite the cold rain and mud that circumferences the Back Bay Fens, runners gathered from near and far to run in the inaugural "Run the Fens" foot race on Saturday.

Funds raised go towards Big Sister Boston, an organization with one-on-one mentoring programs between women and girls between the ages of 7 and 15. Big Sisters and Little Sisters will go and do all types of activities together like watching a movie, baking, or seeing a sports game together. The outings make for a bonding experience between the two, with both the Little and the Big helping develop one another.

Runners told WBZ NewsRadio's Jay Willett that the program hits close to home.

"I had a Big Brother from Big Brother Big Sister when I was young, so to support an organization that's similar is obviously a great mission," one runner named Evan said.

President and CEO Annissa Essaibi George says the turnout was incredible to see especially with the downpour.

"These runners they're commitment both to our sport and to our work at Big Sister— I'm impressed. We often focus on the impact it has on the Little, better engagement in school and better grades, but the impact it has on the Big Sister on her confidence, on her ability to have healthy relationships," Essaibi George said.
