DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – National Grid is rolling out a new piece of equipment.

An event held on Tuesday, August 10 in Dorchester announced National Grid’s use of fully-electric EV backhoe. The equipment is designed to reach the goal of zero-emissions.

While backhoe is usually a noisy piece of equipment, this new type of backhoe is much quieter. John Williams heads ViRDI, a brand part of a total biometric solution provider which built the machine with National Grid.

He said the machine is perfect for any urban area such as college campuses, city centers, universities and medical centers.

“As the technology improves, we will displace everything,” Williams added. He says backhoe works faster than diesel as well.

National Grid said it has been at the forefront of incorporating battery-powered construction equipment into businesses. Electrifying its vehicles with this type of technology is among the many initiatives the company is implementing to meet this target.
