Manchester, NH (WBZ NewsRadio) — As New Hampshire gears up for a phased reopening of businesses in the state starting May 11th, concerns are growing that Massachusetts residents will cross the border.
Massachusetts has the third most coronavirus cases in the United States, while New Hampshire has one of the lowest caseloads in the nation.
As the granite state begins to reopen, Governor Chris Sununu is concerned.
"Even just this last weekend, over 80% of the cars crossing into Seabrook, NH were Massachusetts plates. It gets us very nervous just in terms of hotels, beaches. How do we reopen restaurants and not expect 80% of people to come out of Mass. and into Nashua?"
Retail stores, hair salons and golf courses are among the businesses set to reopen in New Hampshire on May 11th. Restaurants reopen on May 18th. Seacoast beaches remain closed.
There will be some limitations on those services.
Golf courses will be open to New Hampshire residents and club members only.
Hair salons will be by appointment only, customers and employees will be required to wear face masks, and no blow-drying will be allowed.
Restaurants will be allowed to have outdoor seating by reservation but indoor and bar seating will remain closed.
Medical centers in New Hampshire have already resumed elective medical procedures.
