REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Angela Guarino-Sawaya fulfilled a lifelong dream Monday night when she was sworn in as one of Revere's new city councilors, but her path to this point was not easy.
For the last few years, Guarino-Sawaya battled stage-4 breast cancer. While getting through the treatment was no easy task, she told WBZ's Carl Stevens she did not give up and found ways to push through.
"It was a year and a half of extreme chemotherapy and Neulasta shots that kept me in bed for days," she said. "I would have a new wig every day and it would look fantastic. My big thing is that I kept myself up. You need to bring yourself up and say I can beat this. I can do what I have to do to survive and that's what I did."
In the end, Guarino-Sawaya beat cancer and after getting a clean bill of health, she hit the campaign trail. When out campaigning she spoke with her future constituents about her battle with breast cancer and how it gave her the strength to pursue her dream, all while wearing plenty of pink.
She ended up winning her race and the culmination of all of her hard work came when she took her oath to serve as one of Revere's city councilors.
"This is the one thing I wanted in my life," she said. "I'm really thrilled about being able to accomplish what I accomplished and nothing was going to stop me"
