REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio)Department of Conservation and Recreation officials want to help keep people safe this time of year when enjoying outdoor activities along bodies of water.

While the sun and warm temperatures may make it tempting to go for a swim, the water temperature is still very cold, so cold it can literally cause shock and hypothermia that can lead to drowning.

At Revere Beach, WBZ's James Rojas, purely for scientific purposes, stuck his bare feet in the water, a move he said he "instantly regretted". James also talked to some of the people on the beach about the region's well-deserved reputation for icy cold water. David is a local resident who said he knows not to go in the ocean water this early in the beach season.

“I’ve lived in the greater Boston area my entire life,” he said. “I definitely realized the water can be really cold even up until July.”

Officials say icy cold water temperatures this time of year extend to most ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Boaters are reminded of the importance to follow life vest rules and regulations.
