1 Rescued In Dorchester Fire; 4 Displaced

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One person has been found unconscious and a dog has died after a multi-alarm fire at a triple-decker home in Dorchester.

The Boston Fire Department received the call for a blaze at 83 Holmes Avenue just after 6:30 a.m. When they arrived, flames were shooting out of the roof.

The fire was contained to the third floor. Once inside, fire crews discovered an unconscious person, who was rushed to the hospital. Their condition was not yet known.

Resident Christopher Hall told WBZ NewsRadio's Shari Small that unconscious person was his roommate, who he said he's been trying to evict for three years.

Hall said they got into a physical fight right before the fire started—then, after Hall went back to sleep, he described waking to find the building in flames.

"I've had a couple of tosses with him," Hall said. "Next thing I knew, around seven, the smoke's coming out, things are bad, I have to get out of the house."

Firefighters also pulled Hall's dog from the building, but the animal did not survive.

"My dog didn't follow me," Hall said. "I thought the dog was with me."

A neighbor in the second-floor unit was treated for smoke inhalation. A cat from that apartment was also rescued.

The fire caused an estimated $400,000 worth of damage and left four people displaced.

Boston Fire said an investigation is underway, but the cause of the blaze wasn't yet known; Hall said he believes his roommate started the fire.
