PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An elementary school in Peabody might be fostering the next generation of newscasters and journalists.

It's all thanks to a new media club started by South Memorial Elementary School teachers Heidi Mason and Lisa Palazola. The pair started the club a few months ago for any third-grade students interested in journalism.

Palazola told WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens they wanted to teach the kids valuable lessons about the media.

"We feel it's important for students to know they need reliable sources of information and be able to get out reliable information for other people," Palazola said.

Even though the club is still relatively new it's proven to be a hit with students like Lucas.

"We get to learn how to be a newscaster and how to be on the radio," he said. "It's very cool."

The club is also inspiring students like Maggie, she said she likes the class and hopes to pursue a career in journalism someday.

"I get to be with my friends and we learn about journalism and media," she said. "Someday we'll get to be behind the camera."

The club meets after school.
