CHATHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you’re interested in the travel patterns of great white sharks, there will soon be an app for that.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in Chatham is in the testing stages of a new app that will allow users to see where white sharks have traveled in the area.
The app compiles information gleaned from all shark detections on record and provides an interactive experience for users to "track" the sea creatures.
It is not yet available publicly, but the Conservancy said it will be posted on app stores soon after they make any updates necessary to be sure it can handle large volumes of users.
Creation and development of the app is being funded by a grant from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institutions Sea Grant Program. The program supports local scientists who are conducting research in the areas of marine life, tourism and more.
As more white sharks continue to be spotted off the Cape, conservation and marine life officials have tied the surge mainly to an increase in local seal populations, that serve as food supply for the creatures.
