Phone Calls Spike Amid The Coronavirus Pandemic

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow, a resurgence of phone calls appears to be impacting cell phone service providers.

Verizon says it's handling about 800 million wireless calls a day, more than double the amount of calls made on Mother's Day. Verizon also says calls normally peak in the mornings and evenings, but now, call volume remains high throughout the day.

Verizon spokesman David Wiseman says there is a lot of data that shows more people than ever are staying connected, and the duration of calls is up 33 percent. "When the chips are down, people reach out and talk to each other," he said. "We're especially seeing more video calling among grandparents who want to see the kids. Obviously, that's the safest way for them to stay connected."
