CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cambridge is moving forward with its plan to add more bike lanes along Massachusetts Avenue, but not everyone is happy about it.
Small business owners in the Porter Square area say that with the addition of quick-build bike lanes comes the removal of parking spots, which potentially means fewer customers.
Many owners have put up signs in their storefront urging people to fight back against the bike lanes' installation.
"The plan removes parking, hurts our businesses, increases congestion, and commandeers our neighborhood streets," the sign reads. "Quick-Build will devastate our beloved local shops, health care providers, and restaurants and force them out of business or out of Cambridge."
Proponents of the new bike lanes point to the lives that could be saved with safer cycling infrastructure.
Last month, an attempt to delay the building of quick-build bike lanes through Porter Square by up to four years failed on a City Council vote of 6-3.
