HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A driver who crashed into a historic Hingham home on Thursday told police she was trying to avoid hitting a squirrel.

According to a press release from Hingham Police, the car drove off the road and into the house on North Street at 6:35 a.m. on Thursday morning. Responding officers found the driver sitting on the sidewalk when they arrived.

The car, a 2014 Audi Q7, was reportedly traveling east on North Street from Beal Street when the driver, a 19-year-old Hingham woman, said she swerved to the right side of the road to avoid a squirrel.

Approximately half of the car entered the home. Police said the owners of the house and the driver did not suffer any injuries. A portion of North Street was briefly closed and then reopened.

The driver was alone in the car -- and was issued a citation for failing to stay in marked lanes.

According to the town's website, the house has a lengthy history, as it was built in the year 1650. The Library of Congress lists the property as the Samuel Lincoln Cottage, also known as President Abraham Lincoln's great-grandfather.
