Record-Breaking Fish Caught In New Hampshire

WEST STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, a local fisherman caught an "enormous lake trout" last month, breaking a state record.

In an Instagram post om Saturday, the department said Thomas Knight of Meredith, N.H. caught the fish while ice fishing on Big Diamond Pond in West Stewartstown on Feburary 25.

It said the fish has been "certified as a new state record, eclipsing the one established in 1958" which was 28 lbs.

Knight, an experienced fisherman, reportedly wrestled with the huge trout before pulling it up onto the ice.

"After a few phone calls to some close fishing buddies, Knight made his next call to.... a fisheries biologist with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department" who certified the size of the catch. There was one small snag though, when the weight of the fish was too much for the 30 lb scale.

The fish was eventually weighed at a package distribution center and came in at 37.65 lbs. It was named "the largest lake trout ever caught in New Hampshire."

It measured 40 inches in length, 27 inches in girth, and was estimated to be between 50-60 years old.
