Red Sox Celebrate Opening Day

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's time to play ball! Finally.

For the first time since last September the Red Sox will host a real life game in Fenway Park Friday.

"It's going to be incredible and kind of emotional for a lot of people to get base ball going at Fenway," Red Sox President Sam Kennedy said. "We're very grateful for everybody who has pulled together and has just been working around the clock to get ready."

The Orioles are in town for a weekend series. Governor Charlie Baker will throw out the first pitch.

But you don't have to worry about getting down to the field. Games will be played without fans in the stadium, and with only 60 games this season, players say they feel like they need to start hot and ride that wave into the playoff.

"I'm definitely excited for it, I'm ready for it," says First Baseman Mitch Moreland, "It's been a long time. Having that layoff, it was not what I think what any of us wanted but it's good to have baseball back and be ready to go."

Moreland says the team has adjusted to the new routine and playing conditions but admits it's still hard not being able to hang out with other players as much.

There will still be an opening ceremony Friday evening and the team plans on paying tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement.

First pitch for all nighttime games has been pushed back this year to 7:30p.
