BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Longtime WBZ NewsRadio reporter and anchor Doug Cope, 69, died earlier this week after a short battle with cancer.

Cope spent 17 years with WBZ NewsRadio starting in 2003. He also worked for several other radio stations, Mass Highway and on Beacon Hill after graduating from Emerson College in 1976.

He leaves behind two children and a long list of friends and colleagues.

WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens wrote a poem to honor Doug Cope:

I could point out to you a stain on a rug,

A crack in an otherwise beautiful mug,

I could show you a tugboat that refuses to tug,

But I could never find anything wrong with Doug.

A baritone stallion pulling journalism's cart,

A steed of integrity, kind and smart.

He was right as rain, a fountain of truth,

In the mouth of veracity he claimed every tooth.

A hard working guy who refused to pout,

He knew stuff the rest of us knew nothing about:

Some obscure city in an unknown land,

Some indecipherable aspect of a perplexing plan,

The footnotes buried in some legislation,

His Queen Elizabeth impersonation.

He loved old motorcycles, admired old cars,

Embraced countless breweries and sampled some bars.

To every nor'easter he brought a shovel of hope:

I owe a lot to my friend, Doug Cope.

He provided a treasure not easy to find:

Showing us you can be both smart and kind.

Professional, calm, never blew a fuse.

Heaven's got someone to read the news.

I want to pause now, raise a microbrewed beer,

And toast a good man who very much is still here.
