PROVIDENCE, R.I (WBZ NewsRadio) — Rhode Island has passed a new law banning the release of a large number of balloons at one time.

In an effort to protect local wildlife and animals, bill HB5376 prohibits anyone from intentionally releasing 10 or more helium or other lighter-than-air balloons outdoors.

The legislation was signed into law by Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee on Friday after passing through the state legislature. Violators will start facing a fine of $100 when the policy takes effect in November of 2021.

According to AP News, supporters of the law said balloon releases pose a "serious threat to birds, marine animals and other wildlife that ingest or become entangled in balloon litter."

The measure will not impact hot-air balloons, indoor balloon releases, or balloons related to scientific and weather research.
