NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A local three-time Olympian completed a super-human swim to benefit cancer research in memory of her father on Saturday. Elizabeth Beisel, of South Kingstown, was the first woman to complete the Point Judith, R.I-Block Island 10.4 mile open ocean swim.

Beisel did the "Block Cancer" swim for the non-profit Swim Across America, which holds swimming events across the country to raise money for cancer research. Beisel raised more than $136,000 for the race — about 90% of her goal. Her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last December and passed away this past summer.

"To anyone who has been touched by cancer – yesterday was for you and your loved ones," said Beisel on Instagram on Sunday.

The swim had originally been scheduled for Sept. 9, but was pushed off because Hurricane Larry caused dangerous swells that made the swim impossible. Beisel swam the route nonstop and unassisted.

"To all the little girls out there – you are strong, and you can do ANYTHING," she said.
