Road Diet Proposed For Soldiers Field Road

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio)— A new road diet proposal could see Soldiers Field Road slimming down.

The proposal from the Department of Conservation and Recreation would have the number of lanes on Soldiers Field Road reduced from two to one and add in a bike lane for each direction. This proposal is part of a larger plan by the DCR to develop the Herter Park area the road goes through.

These bike lanes would be in addition to an already existing bike and pedestrian path off of the road that runs by the Charles River.

While some bikers said they liked the addition, WBZ's Karyn Regal (@karynregal) spoke with one who said she preferred riding on the path closer to the river.

"I feel safe biking here along the river, I'm not sure I would want to be on Soldiers Field Road right next to the cars," she said.

Some people who drive in Boston were opposed to the idea of narrowing the road and adding a bike lane.

"We've got too many bike lanes around, they're crazy," a pedestrian said.
