WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —Nearly a dozen robotic instruments will be playing alongside human musicians Sunday at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Assistant Music Professor Scott Barton gave WBZ NewsRadio’s Kim Tunnicliffe a demo of what the musical robots will sound like in concert.
The robotic instruments and the human musicians will be playing The Who’s “Eminence Front,” as well as some classical music.
Barton said the robots will listen to what the humans are playing, and then improvise, coming up with their own unique music.
“The robots are actually going to interact with the human musicians so that they have their own intelligence that allows them to interpret what the musicians are doing,” Barton said.
Barton has been building the musical robots over the course of the last decade.
