Salem, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The future of public transportation is the lofty subject of a learning collaboration between middle school students in Salem and Cambridge.
Students at Collins Middle School and Saltonstall School are working on a 10-week project called 'Transitopia,' a collection of sketches, 3D prototypes, and storyboards on what transit systems may look like by mid-century.
The project is part of a pilot program launched last year seeking ways to reimagine middle schools to be more engaging and help students feel more connected, said Chelsea Banks, dean of innovation at Salem Public Schools. "We are working on creativity and problem solving, 21st century skills that all students need," she said.
The pilot has paired the district in Salem with the NuVu Innovation School in Cambridge to encourage collaboration.
