QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — There's nothing quite like gliding across a smooth sheet of ice on skates in the biting cold of winter.

If you're lucky enough to find a safe frozen body of water that isn't covered in weeds, cracks, and snow, that can become a local winter favorite for skaters.

But as far as outdoor skating rinks go, they are harder to find than ever.

So, it's great news for skaters on the South Shore that an outdoor skating rink will be opening soon in Quincy next to General's Bridge just in time for the winter season. "There's not a lot of places to skate outdoors near the city," said this Quincy resident named Rod, who is originally from Newfoundland.

He said the outdoor rink is great news because he hasn't been able to skate outdoors since he was a kid playing pond hockey. "I remember doing that as a kid, even if it probably wasn't the safest thing to do."

When the fully-refrigerated rink opens at the end of this month, it plans on having skate rentals available.
