SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Ahead of Monday’s total solar eclipse, the greater Boston area has been preparing for the astronomical event in a variety of ways.

In Somerville, one couple opened up their home on Sunday for a yard sale with an “out of this world” theme.

“The eclipse was imminent. You never know what could happen during an eclipse, so we wanted to be ready with the basement free of junk,” said Mario Bollini.

Bollini explained that the eclipse-themed yard sale was the perfect excuse to clean out his and his wife's home.

“Well, eclipses don’t come by very often, so we’ve been saving up. We’ve got this stuff in our basement for maybe two years since we moved into this place.”

Bollini used the eclipse excitement to encourage people to buy his yard sale offerings.

“One of the things that I know about eclipses is that it will get dark. And so you could avail yourself of our lamps and lightbulbs for that.”

And that wasn’t all. “The eclipse is a great time to bring your family together around one of our tastefully chosen dining tables,” he pitched.

Bollini even printed out fliers with eclipse terminology, like “Be blinded by deals that are out of this world!” and “The totality of our offering must go.”

The 2024 total solar eclipse is happening April 8, and its path of totality is going through a few New England states: Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Bollini and his wife plan to watch the eclipse from their Somerville home.
