SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — When you got to go, you got to go, but what happens when there are few, if any places to go to?
That is the complaint Somerville residents have concerning the amount of public restrooms: there are not enough available.
"We are open to the public, so we just have public folks just walk in and use our bathrooms, be it folks hanging out in the park or folks who are out here shopping at the farmers market on Saturdays" Somerville Media Center Executive Director Kat Powers told WBZ NewsRadio Friday.
The lack of public toilets has not only caused a lot of bathroom goers to knock on the Media Center's door in Union Square, but according to Powers, it has also created some disgusting messes outside as well.
"There have been times where we show up and I have to scrub poop off the building," Powers said.
In response, the City of Somerville has approved funding to install three new public restrooms in Union Square, Davis Square, and East Somerville. The new toilets will be free and open around the clock. They are expected to be installed by fall.
"I think this is a great idea, very happy that Somerville leads the way, as does Union Square," said Powers.
