WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A suspect who shot and wounded a Wilbraham police officer is in custody after an hours-long standoff Saturday night, officials said.
According to Massachusetts State Police, the suspect exchanged gunfire with Wilbraham Police at a residence on Old Carriage Drive around 8:40 p.m. A Wilbraham officer was struck by gunfire and taken to an area hospital.
Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence as multiple State Police units responded to the scene to assist local police.
Police set up a roadblock to isolate the cul-de-sac and spent several hours trying to make contact with the suspect and resolve the situation, including establishing an open phone line into the house, MSP said.
Shortly after midnight, Troopers with the State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team broke a ground floor window and sent a drone into the home to locate the suspect, police said.
The man was found with gunshot injuries, taken into custody, and transported to the hospital for treatment, MSP said.
Prior to the arrest, Troopers rescued two other people inside the home who has escaped onto the roof of the adjoining garage, authorities said.
