STONEHAM Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —   The Superintendent of Stoneham Public Schools will keep his job after failing to inform district parents last month that a convicted sex offender was caught wandering on school grounds. The man was also armed with knives as well. Specifically, the incident occurred on March 21, and parents were not informed of the incident until 5 days after it occurred, causing widespread outrage amongst parents with children in the school district. The school committee has decided to keep superintendent Ljungberg in his role at the school despite parents petitioning to have him fired. Ljungberg also apologized to parents for his mistake.

“I will continue to work hard to regain your trust, and the trust of this community as a public official and as the leader of this amazing school district,” Ljungberg said at a recent school committee meeting.

“It is undeniable that the buck stops with me. I am sorry that I did not handle this situation differently,” Ljungberg added.

The convicted sex offender was arrested on school grounds and was identified as 39-year-old James McCarty, who has a history of mental illness and is facing numerous charges in connection with this incident.
